SAMT is coordinating the event along with 3 other Freethought organizations in Iceland: Sidmennt (The Icelandic Ethical Humanist Association), Skeptikus, and Vantrú. The following speakers have already been confirmed for the conference:
Richard Dawkins will be speaking about “The God Delusion”, the subject of his newest book and subtitle for part 1 of his controversial UK Channel 4’s two part TV series “Root of All Evil?”.
Julia Sweeney will be performing her hit play “Letting Go of God”. Dan Barker will tell us how he lost faith in faith, how to debate theists and discuss Humanist morality. Dan will also give a closing concert of atheist songs.
Margaret Downey will be talking about celebrating life the secular way, the importance of training Humanist celebrants to conduct secular alternatives to religious ceremonies.
Mynga Futrell and Paul Geisert will be discussing the re-framing of strategy for secularists in order to be viewed as equal players in society.
Sigurdur Holm Gunnarsson, vice president of Sidmennt, will describe the church/state situation in Iceland and the struggle for equal status for all life stance organizations.
Stefan Palsson, an Icelandic historian, will describe the impact the publishing of the only atheist book in the Icelandic language had on the local population back in 1948 and ever since.
Annie Laurie Gaylor, co president of the Freedom From Religion Foundation who will be speaking about "No Gods - No Masters: Women vs. Orthodoxy". Women's rights increase as religion's hold on society decreases. A brief look at current religious threats to women.
Steindor Erlingsson an Icelandic science historian who will be speaking about misguided education.
The conference schedule is yet to be fully finalized and will be posted at a later date. There will be an informal get together in the evening of 23 June with the two conference days being 24 and 25 June.
Included in the conference package is the get-together on Friday evening, with refreshments as well as conference participation for 2 days, with 4 coffee breaks and 2 lunches. Dinners and overnights are not included.
Price, per person: ISK 18.000 (approx. $280). A 5.000 ISK discount is in place for students, elderly people (above 67) and the disabled. All prices are shown in Icelandic Kronur (ISK) and US amounts (where shown) are subject to current currency exchange rates.
