I just noticed this and am horrified. It is totally a typo. I apologize to anyone who was insulted. Slurs are not my bag. I abhor them. I will edit it if I can right now. edit: I can't edit it but sent an alert. Again, I am sorry if people were offended in any way.

The question to ask is "what would the other man (er, person, if you want to be gender neutral about it) say is the way home?". The truth-teller will point to the wrong way home because that is the answer that the liar would give. The liar will point to the wrong way home because it is the...

You think that the Supreme Court will stop them? Yes justice is very slow and if you're high up (like Mr. Cheney) justice doesn't move at all. Look at Abu Ghraib, all the little people were charged, such as privates and sergeants (as they should be) but hardly any highly ranking officers or members...

Why do atheists discuss religion?
Posted by Jon on July 06, 2008,05:47 in the Religion forum
Brilliant, I love the kiddies toy experiment. So I wonder if my parents gave me the "moderate punishment". I knew I wasn't supposed to not believe in god because my parents were Christian. But, they gave me a good education (which inevitably leads to the conflict of truths). I wasn't getting...

Some light entertainment

OK - here is a little riddle that may offer some light entertainment/a break from the heavy topics. A man is walking along a path through a forest. It becomes very dark (nighttime, for want of a better word ;)), and he realises in the morning he has gotten himself completely lost. He doesn't...

See the link I posted in my reply to Rune ;) That may be a starter for ten. If not, i'll quote some Freud (and others) if you want. (As an aside, I have a riddle I'll post in the miscellaneous section that will get the old grey matter going ;))

Why do atheists discuss religion?
Posted by duinoelegy on July 06, 2008,05:20 in the Religion forum
Surely you would have to ask yourself why people may attempt to hold an untruth within their mind? Or you mean they are simply unaware that their belief is false? Isn't this what I said in the previous post?! Are you aware of cognitive dissonance? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognitive_dissonance Have...

Why do atheists discuss religion?
Posted by Jon on July 06, 2008,05:15 in the Religion forum
I hope you don't mind me jumping in, but when I held my belief in a god, I also knew that the things that were claimed of this god could not be possible (or just lacked reliable evidence). However, I did not seem to hold both these bits of information in the same part of my brain, I always had to move...

The Nature of “Terrorism”

OK - so do you mean 'belief' in the sense of 'viewpoint held', (since many belief systems across the world do actually seem to be working, and the conflict usually arises when these belief systems encounter each other)? I think it depends on what you mean by 'will work' and what you mean by 'belief'. I'm...

Why do atheists discuss religion?

Erh... Might be lost in negation but... I think they are not awareness that their belief is false. They believe it to be true, but it's not. In other words: They believe that Gods exists but that is not true. Hence they have an untrue, that is a false belief. As I said (I realise I missed a "not"...

But it is a belief - it is a belief that not holding a belief system will yield far more positive results than holding a belief system will. This in essence makes it a belief system, as one has to comply with the belief that no belief is the most effective belief to have. In turn, you have just...

We seem to agree on something. Maybe ;) So you think they are simply lacking in awareness that their belief may not in actual fact be false? I'll write some words on the nature of the psychological make-up of having a belief in a God if you wish (that is, as current psychological insight...

The Nature of “Terrorism”

So it's relative? You don't care if you are Christian, atheist, Muslim, Jewish...? I contend that only one belief system will work - and that is atheism. I don't think that is a relative statement: I thought I wanted a Christian state, but now I see that was wrong, not that it was just different....

I agree and it puzzles me a bit. I generally experience my English to be quite good. I think the problem may lie in our deeper background assumptions. Do I comprehend you correctly here? I don't think that the person believing in God believes so because that belief is false, neither consciously of subconsciously....

Could the problem of democracy therefore be considered the suppression of the expression of violence? Is this why democracy feels the need to spread, as the nature of converting a non-democratic nation into a democratic one would be violent, and this would satisfy the inherent need for violence...

Agreed, but this is in the OP. Agreed, but again this is in the OP Well of course we don't have an agreed definition but I don't think any form of violence has gravitated from non-governmental groups to states or vice versa. Perhaps it's just that small groups are more noticeable now because their...
