"Absence of evidence" & "proving a negative"
Posted by Voter on July 03, 2009,01:58 in the Philosophy forum
This is a matter of spin. You could just as easily say that the empty table is positive evidence that your keys are not on it. Absence of evidence might be that you can't get into your house to even look at the table.

The Five Prophecies of Jerome
Posted by Martin on July 03, 2009,01:44 in the Religion forum
(continued)
These are Jerome's 5 prophecies/allusions.
For each of the prophecies/allusions we'll look at (1) Jerome's comment (2) look up the NT allusion, (3) quote the Hebrew Old Testament (taken from KJV) and (4) the Greek Old Testament (i.e. the Septuagint translated by Lancelot Brenton)

The Five Prophecies of Jerome
Posted by Martin on July 03, 2009,01:44 in the Religion forum
Once up a time the church was happy (this happened a long time ago). The old Testament, the Apocryphals and the New Testament were all written in Greek.
Whenever Jesus or the apostles quoted The Old Testament, you could look it up in the The Old Testament, the Septuagint, and confirm that the quote...

Why Jesus mythicism's important

Sure!
World peace -- which we still don't have today even with the Cold War now history -- would not obtain with but one dissenter, true. But this exchange here is comparing attitudes and not all-peace and/or all-war results. The attitudes that yielded the two sides' blinking in the 1980s came primarily...

"Absence of evidence" & "proving a negative"
Posted by Bill on July 03, 2009,00:44 in the Philosophy forum
I think I can draw a distinction between proving that some circumstance is not true and that some thing does not exist.
Proving that your keys are not on the table does not prove that they have ceased to exist, just that they are not in that one specified location. If you go on to prove that they...

May I butt in?
The vital point is that neither "love thy enemies" nor "crush thy enemies" will ensure world peace. "Love thy enemies" might preserve world peace once everybody has agreed to it, but add only one disenter, and it goes down the drain.

It seems to me that we are in agreement. The result of the poll is: 1) No evidence that McX lives in my city. Taken together with the knowledge that 2) McX is very sociable and 3) we actually performed that poll, makes the lack of evidence (1) evidence that McX does not live in my city.

"Absence of evidence" & "proving a negative"
Posted by Rune Nyrup on July 03, 2009,00:18 in the Philosophy forum
This is one sense in which it is a trivial truth. It is very rare that we have definitive evidence for anything, or that we can prove it.
On the contrary, I think it is quite often that absence of evidence is evidence of absence. The "maxim" is not even a general thruth with a few counter...

And if the authorities were sufficiently aroused in Jerusalem, where do the Jews and Judas come into the picture?
And how do you reconcile your claim with Irenaeus, who had it on perfect authority that Jesus'...
